Waste that can't be recycled can be turned into a source of low-carbon heat

The Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) on Devon Street, just off Old Kent Road, is a feat of modern design and engineering.

Operated by Veolia, it can deal with over 200,000 tonnes of waste every year, separating the borough’s mixed recycling – ready to be turned into something new.

All of the borough’s black bag waste is taken to the IWMF and, once the recyclable content has been removed, what remains is turned into a low carbon fuel. This provides energy for the National Grid as well as heating for almost 3,000 local homes via a district heating network.

The Wonder Open Day (part of London Open House weekend) takes place on Saturday 21 September, with free tours between 10am and 4pm.

Your waste is a resource that can help to build a sustainable future – so come along and find out how.
