Southwark Council has appointed a team led by Maccreanor Lavington to help produce new design guidelines for development in the Dunton Rd, Crimscott St and Mandela Way area.

The multi-disciplinary team of consultants includes Maccreanor Lavington, Architecture 00, Deft Space and Civic Engineers.

Building on the existing plans for the Old Kent Road Opportunity Area, the team will revise the current masterplan and produce a design code for development in the Dunton Road, Crimscott Street and Mandela Way area.

The code will apply to schemes on sites in this area (known as site allocations OKR 2, OKR 3 and OKR 4 in the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan) which do not yet have planning consent and which are in phase 2 of the plan’s delivery.

The guidance, which will be informed by the Government’s National Model Design Code, will help the council to refine the proposed mix of uses and adaptability of these sites. It will help to create a more permeable, mixed-use, neighbourhood with frontages onto the street, while also retaining existing roads and mature trees.

The new design code will build upon the council’s vision and masterplan and will include a toolkit with specific, detailed parameters for the physical development of the area.

This project will provide part of the evidence-base that informs the final iteration of the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan, which will go out for public consultation next year.

Have your say

An important part of the team’s work will be to engage with residents and businesses to ensure the design code is locally-led and informed by those who live and work in the neighbourhood.

You can find out more and get involved at an exhibition at Drawing Room on Monday 11 December between 3-7pm.

This is your chance to hear more about the plans, speak to the team and get answers to your questions. The team will present the draft design code and revised masterplan and there will also be a physical model of the area to help you visualise the plans.
