Waste that can't be recycled can be turned into a source of low-carbon heat

If you have ever wondered what happens to your household recycling and rubbish, Veolia’s free open day is your chance to find out.

Located just off Old Kent Road, the IWMF is home to Veolia’s Materials Recovery Facility, one of the largest in the UK.

Visitors will have the opportunity to take a tour inside and talk with industry-leading experts as well as frontline staff who are committed to transforming household waste materials into valuable resources.

Tours are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. So be sure to arrive early to secure your spot.

Visitors can expect a range of free activities to keep the whole family entertained. These include a community plant sale, bike fixing and craft workshops. Community groups from across the borough will also be on hand to showcase everything that Southwark is doing to tackle the climate crisis.

Veolia Southwark’s Wonder Day is part of the Open House festival (6 to 17 September), an annual event that celebrates the city’s housing, architecture and neighbourhoods. For two weeks each year, sites across London take part in the Open House Festival, granting rare glimpses into some of the capital’s best-kept secrets.
