The new development will provide 24 new homes in a five storey building on the corner of Penry Street and Old Kent Road.

The scheme also includes three new retail spaces, garden areas and a roof garden.

Southwark Council and Glenman Corporation held a topping out ceremony to celebrate reaching roof-level on 21 February 2023.

Thirteen of the new homes will be council homes for local people. The remaining 11 will be for private sale (which helps to fund the development).

The site, which sits opposite the community space at 231 Old Kent Road, was previously occupied by a petrol station.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for Council Homes and Homelessness, said:

“I’m delighted to be here today to celebrate building works reaching the roof level at this exciting new development. These new homes will be a real asset for the local community, helping to tackle the housing crisis locally and enhancing the local area.

“But it’s not just new homes that we are providing – the new retail spaces will boost the local economy and create new opportunities for local people. We are also providing new cycle parking, garden areas and a roof garden as part of this development. I’m proud that we are being innovative and creative in the way we use our spaces to support our local communities to thrive.”

Micheál Conneally, Contracts Director at Glenman, said:

“We are delighted to have reached this stage of the project. We are very proud to be involved in this project to deliver 24 new homes, all sustainably designed and constructed. We look forward to our continued collaboration as we finish this development.”

In line with Southwark Council’s local lettings policy, at least 50 per cent of the new council homes will be offered to local tenants in housing need already living in the immediate area.

The remaining homes will be offered to others on the council’s wider housing waiting list.
