Climate adapted, resilient and green neighbourhoods
The council plans to improve the environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
Both the draft Old Kent Road Area Action Plan and Southwark’s Sport and Physical Activity Strategy aim to improve open spaces in the area. Proposals include:
- Brimmington Park
The council plans to build a new sports centre with changing rooms in Brimmington Park. It also wants to add more football pitches and to improve the old ones. This will include new 5-a-side or 7-a-side pitches; a Toro interactive football facility; removal of existing hardstanding; better planting and improved access to the park. - Leyton Square
The council is working with the Friends of Leyton Square to develop a new facility that complements the adventure playground (partly funded with CIL money from local developers). This will provide indoor space for children of all ages. - Bird in Bush Park
Refurbishing the BMX track was proposed as a local CIL project in 2020 and has also been suggested by residents on the Ledbury estate. The council is consulting with local residents and hopes to deliver the refurbishment during the first phase of the Ledbury estate development (2023-24). - Northfield House Community Garden
The council is working with the Northfield House Tenants & Residents Association (TRA) to help deliver a resident-led plan for improvements to the community garden. The TRA has made an application to the Mayor of London’s Grow Back Greener Fund to help fund the scheme. - New Tustin park
The rebuild of the Tustin estate will deliver a new park (the Tustin Common) and a renewed plaza of approximately 5,690 sqm to replace and improve the current amenity spaces. - Ledbury estate
In rebuilding the estate, the council will provide new communal amenity spaces, play equipment and a new multi-use games area. - New Devonshire Grove park and Sylvan Gardens
Redevelopment of land on Sylvan Grove and Devonshire Grove will provide a new park as well as pedestrian and cycle connections. - Frensham Street and linear parks
A new linear park will provide a fantastic green link between Burgess Park and Old Kent Road. As part of the linear park, the council wants to re-landscape a surplus council depot at Frensham Street to provide play facilities and a café.
The Impact
