The new mural on Old Kent Road railway bridge offers a warm welcome to the borough

The artwork, titled A Home from Home, uses fruit-label motifs to represent local spaces, buildings and businesses; each of them chosen for how they connect the community with a sense of home.

Part funded by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund, the new mural has been guided by the principles of Southwark Council’s Southwark Stands Together initiative, which is helping to ensure every community is represented in the built environment and public spaces we share throughout the borough.

The brief was developed with the local community including residents, businesses and the Southwark Young Advisors .

The team also worked very closely with children from Kender primary school on the designs, with Nicola McCaffrey, the school’s art teacher playing a key role in the process.

The new mural has been painted on both sides of the bridge and creates a distinctive and welcoming landmark on Old Kent Road at roughly the point where Southwark meets Lewisham.
