The London Square development is on the site of the old Crosse and Blackwell factory in the former Rich Industrial Estate, just off Old Kent Road.

The scheme, which includes repurposed industrial spaces, such as The Pickle Factory, won an award for its masterplan at this year’s Housing Design Awards, held in September. The masterplan was designed by architects AHMM.

The development, which received planning approval in 2016 to deliver 406 new homes, including 135 affordable homes, and 225,000 square feet of workspace, was completed in 2023.

As well as much-needed new housing, London Square also includes studios and workspace for local artists and creatives, including Tannery Arts and Southwark Studios and a new, purpose-built community space and gallery for local arts organisation The Drawing Room.

London Square was one of two Southwark housing developments to win a prize at this year’s Housing Design Awards. The other scheme was the stunning Appleby Blue Almshouse development which was funded through an S106 agreement secured by Southwark Council on a large development in Bankside.
