A new Community Hub for Leyton Square

Southwark Council wants to hear your opinion on plans to build a new, mixed-use, Community Hub in Leyton Square.

Leyton Square is a public park on the Friary estate in Peckham, just off Old Kent Road.

At present, the park contains two buildings (The Adventure Play Hut and The Playroom). One of these buildings is used for children’s daycare (under-fives) while the other is empty.

Unfortunately, due to their condition, both of these buildings are due for demolition.

The council has been working in partnership with the Friends of Leyton Square community group on the idea of replacing the two old buildings with one brand new building. The new building will be a purpose built, mixed-use, community facility – the Leyton Square Community Hub – and will complement the new playground that was installed in 2018.

The project is being part-funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money.

Alongside S106 payments, CIL (a levy raised on developers with building projects in the area) is one of the ways in which redevelopment can contribute to improvements to local infrastructure and deliver social value.

The council is now consulting local residents about the plans.

Consultation

A consultation launch event will be held in Leyton Square Park on Saturday 17 August 2024, from 1pm to 4pm. Held in partnership with the Friends of Leyton Square, it promises to be a fun, family oriented afternoon which will include games, face painting and refreshments.

You can also share your opinion online on the council’s consultation website.

The consultation will run until 19 September.
